If there's one Eric Johnson theme you've gotta learn, it's the head to "Cliffs of Dover," a rousing and regal cross-pollination of fusiony shuffle rhythms and violin-influenced, Celtic sounding melodies that won Johnson a Grammy and was perhaps the last guitar instrumental to leave a lasting imprint on the general public. (It continues to do so, because it's featured in Guitar Hero III.) Curiously, while Johnson recorded the rest of Ah Via Musicom with a Strat, he chose to recut this tune with a Gibson ES-335. Following the song's free-time intro, Johnson sets the mood with the partially muted G5-G6-Gmaj7-G6 rhythm figure shown in Cliffs of Dover Lick 1.
