FINGERSTYLE: How to Approach Jazz Guitar Ballads

www.creativeguitarstudio.comAndrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question… Q: Can you do a video on the jazz ballad approach. I’ve read on how you can use; Major and Minor chord substitutions, chromatics, extensions and 3rd’s and other stuff like inversions to pull the melody along in the top voice. But, I just don’t exactly know when this stuff works, or it doesn’t work. Can you maybe teach a jazz ballad piece and show this stuff happening? – Grady, Austrailia A: Jazz Ballads are really nice to work on for building your chops in the department of solo guitar. Creating your song arrangements allows you to consider a number of theoretical concepts with your chord harmonies. I’ll go through a number of melody arranging ideas you can try and that should help you with putting different voices into chords under the melodic phrases that you’re playing. The complete lesson article for this video will be available on the Creative Guitar Studio website shortly.
